Why participate?

By participating in AMID Young Professional, organisations get access to a pool of highly talented, young graduates with the ambition to learn to contribute to the realisation of the SDGs. Trainees bring in the latest academic insights and best practices, and a diverse network of interesting actors. Besides diversity in nationality and culture, they also come from different educational backgrounds.

Facts and figures

  • Over 100 organisations, ranging from NGOs, to government institutes, knowledge institutes and (semi) profit organisations, have offered one or more traineeships.
  • Since 1998 over 500 trainees participated in the AMID programme.
  • Today, 79% of these alumni is still working in the field of international development. Check out more statistics in our latest AMID tracer study 2021.

Beatrijs van Manen – sustainability officer, FMO – Dutch Development Bank: “AMID offers us talented, curious, proactive and critical colleagues. Their background and dialogues with fellow students help them to offer us new perspectives and ideas coming from different disciplines.”

How does it work?

AMID Young Professional runs from February to February. The selection procedure is conducted by a selection committee under the responsibility of AMID. Trainees work four days a week in a junior position and attend lectures and trainings (mostly) on Fridays. The academic part of the AMID Young Professional programme consists of four modules that relate closely to the actual challenges in the field of international development.

Criteria for the position

A suitable position offers our trainees the following:

  • The trainee works four days a week in a junior position (e.g. as programme officer, PMEL officer, policy advisor, business developer, researcher).
  • The trainees’ tasks and responsibilities are of academic level and offer space to develop professional skills;
  • The trainee has a permanent supervisor in the organisation who evaluates their performance.

Recruitment

There are two options for finding a suitable trainee:

  • Introduce your own AMID trainee
    This is a young professional currently working in your organisation of which you believe they would make a good candidate. This saves you the time of onboarding a new colleague (the potential trainee does have to undergo the AMID selection process). Read more in our FAQs.
  • Let us recruit the best fit for your organisation
    External candidates go through an extensive application process, in which only the most promising ones are eventually selected. Besides diversity in nationality and culture, they also come from different educational backgrounds. They hold an academic master and have at least three months’ experience in an international setting (e.g. through research or an internship). Candidates are selected for the AMID Young Professional programme on their motivation to learn, their analytical skills and their communication skills.
