The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide an ambitious agenda to counter urgent and complex global challenges. Collaboration between the private sector, governments, knowledge institutes and civic society organisations is key. All actors have a need for international development professionals who are trained to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders to deliver measurable results and are able to use the latest academic and practical insights to deal with complex issues in the field.
By participating in AMID, organisations get access to a pool of highly talented young graduates with the ambition to acquire the knowledge and skills to contribute to the realisation of the SDGs through multistakeholder collaboration. Trainees bring in the latest academic insights and best practices, as well as a diverse network of interesting actors. Over the years, nearly 100 organisations ranging from NGOs, to government institutes, knowledge institutes and (semi) profit organisations, participated regularly in the programme by offering one or more traineeships.
Offering a trainee position within the AMID programme is a good investment. Since 1998 nearly 500 trainees participated in the EADI accredited AMID programme. Today, over 72% of these alumni is still working in the field of international development. Trainees value AMID for gaining relevant academic knowledge and practical skills, work experience, and network and award the programme with 7.6 out of 10 score in reaching its objective. AMID is a dual one-year programme that combines academic training and practical experience. The complexity of problems in the field of international development requires a combination of innovative and critical thinking with specialized practical skills that young university graduates often lack. AMID aims to bridge this gap with the notion that positive social change can only be realised in collaboration between different actors.
Trainees work four days a week in a junior position and attend lectures and trainings on Fridays. The academic part of the AMID programme consists of four modules that relate closely to the actual challenges in the field of international development.

- A suitable position meets the following criteria:
- The trainee works four days a week in a junior position (e.g. programme officer, PMEL- officer, policy advisor, business developer, researcher);
- The trainees’ tasks and responsibilities require an academic level and offer space to develop professional skills;
- The trainee has a permanent supervisor in the organisation and regularly discusses her/his performance.
AMID trainees come from a variety of academic backgrounds, such as development studies, economy, anthropology, international studies, business and communication studies. They hold an academic master, have at least three months’ experience in an international setting (f.e. through research or an internship) and are highly motivated to contribute to sustainable development and positive social change. Candidates are selected for the AMID programme on their motivation to learn, their analytical skills and their communication skills. Recruitment and selection of candidates is done by professional campus recruiters in close consultation with AMID.
Student applications are open September 1 to September 30. The selection procedure takes place between October and December. Each year, circa 250-300 students apply for the AMID programme. The selection procedure is conducted by campus recruitment agency ImpressiveGreenApple in close consultation with AMID.
Organisations are asked to share a job description (pdf, 96 kB) by the end of September, in which they can also express specific requirements such as academic specialisation, previous experience or language skills.
In November, the selected candidates are matched with the organisations. For each position, AMID recommends three possible trainees. Organisations invite these candidates for a job interview and make the final decision.
When the selection process is completed, AMID, trainee and the organisation sign a three-party framework agreement in December and the trainee is set to start in February of the next year.
Participating organisations pay at least minimum wage, commuting costs for the respective trainee for work and training days, and 90% of the tuition fee for the AMID programme. The tuition fee to be paid by the organisation in 2019 is 9900 euro (to be paid in two instalments), the other 10% is paid by the trainee. Other terms of employment can be agreed on in a separate contract between trainee and organisation.

Organisations can also introduce their own candidate. This way, you can invest in promising talent in your own organisation and benefit from participating in the AMID programme.
