Sara Kinsbergen maakt opnieuw sprong in lijst ‘invloedrijksten’ in Nederlandse filantropie

Dr. Sara Kinsbergen, hoofdopleider van de AMID, is door De Dikke Blauwe opnieuw verkozen tot een van de honderd ‘invloedrijkste spelers in de Nederlandse filantropie’. Ze stormde drie jaar geleden binnen op plek 79, verwierf vorig jaar de 31e plek, en dit jaar weet ze de 22e plaats weten te bemachtigen in de ‘DDB100’, de jaarlijkse ranking van het onafhankelijke journalistieke platform. Marieke van Schaik, directeur van het Rode Kruis Nederland is verkozen tot meest invloedrijkste speler in de wereld van filantropie.

Op basis van de vele gevarieerde en authentieke nominaties die Kinsbergen ten deel viel, kwam de jury tot de conclusie dat Kinsbergen in het domein van de zogenaamde 'Particuliere Initiatieven' (PI's) op handen wordt gedragen. Toch is zij, volgens het juryrapport, geen kritiekloze fan. Vanuit haar rol bij AMID wil Kinsbergen mensen werkzaam in het veld van internationale samenwerking uitdagen om voortdurend datgene wat gangbaar is te bevragen en onbekende paden te ontdekken. Kinsbergen: ‘De vraagstukken waar we als wereldgemeenschap voor staan zijn misschien wel complexer dan ooit. Een actieve bijdrage van burgers, maatschappelijke organisaties, kennisinstellingen, overheid en bedrijven en samenwerking tussen al deze spelers is cruciaal om deze uitdagingen het hoofd te bieden. Zo logisch het klinkt, zo ingewikkeld blijkt de realiteit. Misschien is daarbij wel de belangrijkste uitdaging om over de eigen schaduw heen te willen stappen.’

Vertaling naar de praktijk

Kinsbergen (1982) voert al meer dan vijftien jaar onderzoek uit naar deze PI's. In 2014 promoveerde zij op haar proefschrift ‘Behind the Pictures. Understanding Private Development Initiatives'. Gebruikmakend van zowel kwalitatieve als kwantitatieve onderzoeksmethoden, bestudeerde ze door de jaren PI’s, hun partners en ontwikkelingsprojecten in Nederland, India (2007 & 2014), Indonesië (2011), Kenia (2011 & 2014), Ghana (2014) en Zuid-Afrika (2014 ). Momenteel werkt ze op de afdeling Culturele Antropologie en Ontwikkelingsstudies (CAOS) van de Radboud Universiteit als universitair docent. Als hoofdopleider van de postacademische opleiding AMID vertaalt ze haar kennis en kunde naar de praktijk van jonge, aanstormende professionals, die werkzaam zijn binnen de wereld van internationale samenwerking. Eind vorig jaar werd zij officieel benoemd als lid van de permanente commissie ontwikkelingssamenwerking van de Adviesraad Internationale Vraagstukken. De Adviesraad Internationale Vraagstukken is het adviescollege voor regering en parlement op het gebied van buitenlands beleid. De AIV adviseert gevraagd en ongevraagd over internationale vraagstukken. 

'Academic influencer'

De jaarlijkse ranking van De Dikke Blauwe geeft een overzicht van influentials die met innovatieve ideeën of door bijzondere bestuurlijke kwaliteiten een belangrijke en structurele bijdrage leveren aan ‘het goede doel’. Eerdere aanvoerders van de DDB-lijst waren onder andere Prinses Laurentien en Joop en Janine van den Ende. Volgens Kinsbergen staan er steeds meer (jonge) vrouwelijke wetenschappers op de lijst. Zo positioneerde Pamala Wiepking (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), Malika Ouacha (Erasmus Universiteit) en Sigrid Hemels (Lund University School of Economics and Management) zich dit jaar ook op de lijst.  

Kinsbergen werkt momenteel als een van de eerste zeven embassy science fellow aan de Nederlandse ambassade in Nairobi, een programma van Buitenlandse Zaken en NWO bedoelt om de samenwerkingen tussen Nederlandse ambassades, consulaten en Nederlandse kennisinstellingen te versterken. Als ‘academic influencer’ gaf Kinsbergen de afgelopen jaren meerdere mediaoptredens en steunt zij nadrukkelijk de 'Je bent nodig' campagne van de Radboud Universiteit. Zo vroeg de Universiteit van Nederland haar college te geven over de invloed van particuliere hulporganisaties, wijdde Het Algemeen Dagblad daar een artikel aan, nam ze een podcast op voor het Radboud Centrum Sociale Wetenschappen over de vraag: Hoe word ik een wereldverbeteraar?, en ging ze in gesprek met BNNVara-presentator Patrick Lodiers over de heetste hangijzers binnen ontwikkelingswerk. Tijdens de feestelijke opening van het Nijmeegse Maria Montessorigebouw in september 2022 verzorgde ze een inspirerende 'Maria-Talk' met muzikale ondersteuning.

Sara Kinsbergen makes another leap in list of 'most influential' in Dutch philanthropy

Dr Sara Kinsbergen, chief educator of AMID, has again been voted one of the 100 'most influential players in Dutch philanthropy' by De Dikke Blauwe (a Dutch journalistic independent on- and offline magazine for philanthropy). 3 years ago she stormed in at spot 79, earned the 31st spot last year, and this year manages to secure 22nd place in the 'DDB100', the independent journalism platform's annual ranking. Marieke van Schaik, director of the Red Cross Netherlands has been voted the most influential player in the world of philanthropy.

Based on the many varied and authentic nominations Kinsbergen received, the jury concluded that Kinsbergen is held in high regard in the field of so-called 'Private Initiatives' (PIs). Yet, according to the jury report, she is not without critique. From her role at AMID, Kinsbergen wants to challenge people working in the field of international cooperation to constantly question what is mainstream and discover unknown paths. Kinsbergen: 'The issues we face as a global community are perhaps more complex than ever. An active contribution from citizens, civil society organisations, knowledge institutions, government and businesses and cooperation between all these players is crucial to meet these challenges. As logical as it sounds, reality turns out to be very complicated. Perhaps the most important challenge in this respect is to be willing to step over one's own shadow.'

Translation to practice

Kinsbergen (1982) has been conducting research on these PIs for more than 15 years. In 2014, she obtained her PhD for her thesis 'Behind the Pictures. Understanding Private Development Initiatives'. Using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, over the years she studied PIs, their partners and development projects in the Netherlands, India (2007 & 2014), Indonesia (2011), Kenya (2011 & 2014), Ghana (2014) and South Africa (2014 ). She currently works in the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Development Studies (CAOS) at Radboud University as an associate professor. As head trainer of AMID, she translates her knowledge and expertise into the practice of young, up-and-coming professionals working within the world of international cooperation. Late last year, she was officially appointed as a member of the Development Cooperation Standing Committee of the Advisory Council on International Affairs. The Advisory Council on International Affairs is the advisory body for government and parliament on foreign policy. The AIV provides solicited and unsolicited advice on international issues. 

'Academic influencer'

The annual ranking of De Dikke Blauwe gives an overview of influentials who make a significant and structural contribution to 'charity' with innovative ideas or through special managerial qualities. Previous leaders of the DDB list have included Princess Laurentien and Joop and Janine van den Ende. According to Kinsbergen, there are more and more (young) female scientists on the list. For instance, Pamala Wiepking (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), Malika Ouacha (Erasmus University) and Sigrid Hemels (Lund University School of Economics and Management) also positioned themselves on this year's list.  

Kinsbergen currently works as one of the first seven embassy science fellow at the Dutch embassy in Nairobi, a programma of Foreign Affairs and NWO meant to strengthen collaborations between Dutch embassies, consulates and Dutch knowledge institutions. As an 'academic influencer', Kinsbergen gave several media appearances in recent years and strongly supports Radboud University's 'You have a part to play' campaign. For instance, the University of the Netherlands asked her to lecture on the influence of private aid organisations, Het Algemeen Dagblad devoted an article to it, she recorded a podcast for the Radboud Centre for Social Sciences on the question: How can I help the world?, and she talked to BNNVara presenter Patrick Lodiers about the hottest issues within development work. During the festive opening of the Nijmegen Maria Montessori building in September 2022, she provided an inspiring 'Maria-Talk' with musical accompaniment.
